I was in search of a method that would most quickly and effectively soften my butter without totally melting it.
Immediately close the microwave door to trap hot air inside. You can just set the grater down in. Set the chunks of butter on a plate and cover them with a tray or aluminum foil so nothing can get into the butter. Whether rolling or pounding the friction will warm the butter-and the broader surface area will encourage faster softening.
